Hey all, I'm putting together a weekly anime screening, every Friday, at my apartment in Brighton, on 52 Cummings Road. It's right next to the Sutherland Road T stop on the B line, and close to the Washington Center stop on the C line. I can provide transportation home if we miss the last train, or you can just crash on the couch. The showing gets determined by you! Make some suggestions or just bring something with you, and we'll vote to choose. I have a DVD player and a VHS for you retro folk out there. Sadly, no hookups for anything on a flash drive or computer. I'll provide much of the grub, but feel free to bring something (chips, soda, beer). I figure a crowd of eight or ten people is the limit for my place, and we may change the day and time for future meetups. I'm hoping this can become a regular weekly event.

In the 19th century, impelled by strange coincidences in the theory of infinite sums and integrals, mathematicians began to develop a theory of calculus for functions of a complex variable. What they discovered was a surprising and beautiful geometric structure, which was quickly linked to the burgeoning physical theories of electromagnetism and fluid flow, revolutionized the study of differential equations and number theory, and ultimately inspired the modern field of topology. The goal of our class is to explain and understand those developments.
We will begin with a visual exploration of the complex numbers, and proceed to develop complex calculus and the geometric constructions associated with it. Along the way, we will investigate connections with Fourier analysis, physics, topology, music, and cartography.
The class is also a case study in why mathematics is awesome: how seemingly simple questions lead to beautiful structures, surprising connections, and, of course, more questions.
We'll be meeting Saturday mornings (10AM1PM) and Monday evenings (79PM) at sprout's studios in Davis Square, starting Saturday, 26 June 2010 and ending Monday, 2 August 2010. This seminar will be run by Josh Batson and Lucas Culler; if you've got any questions, check outthe mailing listor email Josh directly.

All levels welcome! Stu has volunteered to host in my place this week; thanks Stu! If you can't show up at the very early start time of 8 sharp, no big deal; just arrive when you can. (If there's rain, I'll send a cancellation notice by 7:30 Sat. morning.) For those who haven't been, Dugger Park (five courts) is not far from the Tufts courts and you can Google Map the address above for directions. If attending, please RSVP so we'll have a rough idea of how many courts we'll need. If you don't know your "level," no problem. If you do have an idea of your level though, please list it when you RSVP as it'll help us group players of similar levels on courts.

Hi folks - OK, I've been in touch with the coordinator and we're invited to join a cleanup on July 31st, Saturday. Please check below and let me know if you want to go. I can get everyone's information and email the coordinator with it all at once, but we want to sign up soon, as it may fill up....:) We can coordinate getting there later..:) Here's some information and a link to the facebook description: Volunteer with the Conservancy Date: Saturday, July 31, 2010 Time: 9:00am - 2:00pm Location: Greenough Blvd. Cambridge/Watertown line Description. Similar to our event on the 17th, we again will focus on pathway clearance along a stretch of Greenough Boulevard frequently used by joggers, cyclists, and contemplative walkers. This area has sections of overgrown invasive plants which, besides harming the ecology of the riverbank, endanger pedestrians and runners. The plants grow over and onto the pathway thus making the path less wide. Our pathway initiative this summer focuses on restoring and performing much needed maintenance to the miles of parkland recreational lanes. This project will be instrumental in our efforts. Original music & MUSICIAN NETWORKING! This Meetup is cross-posted with other musician Meetup groups! If this 4:00 Meetup is too early, drop in when you like, it will last up to 6:30. Share guitar or other low volume instruments /voice styles in shady locations. After meeting & greeting at the stone benches in front of the Abraham Lincoln statue (pictured; look for people with instruments), we can rotate into smaller groups of 3-4 people with similar instrumental interests (like, say, an acoustic only group for "Acoustic only" members, or a minimal, "only if necessary" LOW-volume mini-amp electric or acoustic group: this Meetup will be linked). UPDATE; IF RAIN, THE PLAN IS TO MOVE TO AN ENCLOSED AREA LOCATED UNDER SOME ARCHES of the church located just across from the Common's baseball field, on Mason St; or, possibly even inside this church which has a large musician performing area. YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO BRING ALONG 2 OR SO of your own personally preferred tunes (original or not). Since this is not a performance (we will be mostly facing each other, I guess), no license would be required. Original songwriting encouraged. Personal recorders could be a good thing to have if you come across inspiring stuff. T-stop is Red Line to Harvard Square.
When: Jul 31, 2010 4 PM Where: Somerville, Massachusetts, United States in Somerville, Massachusetts (Sat, 31 Jul 2010 16 )
Acoustic instruments only. We have a piano for pianists. Our meetups are casual exchanges of music performance. Ideally, each musician plays a tune and we rotate. Conversations between rounds occur organically. If we talk we talk, if we don't we don't. Talking is prohibited during performance. Non-musicians are welcome but are not encouraged unless you feel the need to bring a companion for personal reasons. We offer loose seating for 12, a smoke-free, and beautiful apartment that you will feel comfortable in. We play anything we want from classical, folk, to self composed. Collaboration amongst musicians during performance is encouraged but only if the performer invites it :) We look forward to making this a personal and musically rich experience for all of us!

The Big Disappointments: a hurly-burly engine of desert-menace guitars, underlying bass trellis, and psychobilly stomp. The listener is confronted by a soul-bellowing body blast that makes you forget the beer you just bought or the stranger you just met or the taxi your ignorant ass just called. Instead you think about strung-out drifters speeding along cactus-lined highways, truck-stop death-panic scenes, the Gun Club, Lux Interior and his leather pants. - Boston Phoenix Website: http://www.thebigdisappointments.com/ MP3s: Dance Track Budokan, Absolute Farmer, http://www.myspace.com/thebigdisappointments,
Ill Ease is the recording guise of Elizabeth Sharp. After her stint as drummer for 90's Indie scene mainstays (New Radiant Storm King) Elizabeth, tired of bands, decided that she'd rather play all the instruments herself. She started composing songs in her Brooklyn apartment. It's easy to see that Elizabeth has put her passion into a program with her debut album for Too Pure, The Exorcist. Meeting at the intersection of intensely personal and universal, her songs flow out of the speakers and into your brain flipping your switches and leaving their mark. Her rules. Elizabeth is also an accomplished photographer whose work has livened up many a gallery wall and made its way into the collection of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Elizabeth has also rounded up some friends and together they are ready to say "so long stinktown!" and hit the road in search of other stinky towns across the country to play in. Hello Sign Language Lovers! Our "ASL WEEKLY SOCIAL" is going strong ... and with good weather, we're able to sit outside! WOOHOO! WHAT: ASL Weekly Social WHEN: EVERY SUNDAY TIME: 2:30 - 4:30PM WHO: ANYONE is welcome to come by and talk with their hands! WHY: To have fun while practicing this beautiful language WHERE: Davis Sq. Starbucks (email me for directions if needed!) NOTE: Location may change. PLEASE look each week for confirmation. THANKS!!! RED LINE stop OUTBOUND TO ALEWIFE, stop at DAVIS SQ. FREE parking on Sunday. This is an easy-going, casual, ASL get-together to meet people who enjoy American Sign Language, who want to brush up on ASL skills, and want to learn more ASL by using it as often as possible. We also drink coffee! Anyone who loves ASL is welcome to come and be part of the fun! We want to warmly extend an invitation to Deaf people or others fluent/skilled in the language (CODAs for example) to join our group. We strive to have a good time and communicate without using our voices. If we need to, we draw or write what we don't know how to sign, and if lots of folks show up, we split up into small groups and mix and mingle, so we can actually see one another clearly, face-to-face and get a good conversation going. Don't be afraid or shy if you're not "perfect" at ASL, because being "perfect" is not the point of this group. We exist to use ASL and to have fun with it. No one expects that everyone will be at the same level, and none of us mind slowing down or repeating what we have signed so that everyone understands. We all laugh WITH one another as we fumble along, mess things up, and start over again. This isn't an ASL class, since none of us are certified ASL teachers, so there's really no pressure or expectation--other than that we all use ASL to communicate. We all learn from one another! We look up signs that we don't know, or ask one another what signs mean, or fingerspell or "act out" words if we don't know signs for them. IF you've taken an ASL/Sign Language class before (or have had exposure to someone who uses the language) and know the basics (alphabet, numbers 1-20, and even a small vocabulary of signs ), then join us to get your fingers, hands, faces and bodies moving, ASL-style! IF you haven't taken an ASL class, or don't know the basics, don't be discouraged ... you can come along anyway and learn by watching/participating! We also have resources we can suggest for learning ASL, such as books, online classes, and local classes at various locations near Boston. We bring along dictionaries and other ASL books for reference, so we can look up unknown or regional signs, ASL grammar and sentence structure as needed. The organizers of this ASL WEEKLY SOCIAL are students themselves, struggling along, too! So feel free to bring whatever resources you have, we'll all learn more! Notebooks and pens are good, too. If you can, "officially" RSVP, even if the RSVP is "No," so that we know who is definitely going to come. It will be great to see folks! Connie and/or Erika PEACE ...

"Lawd knows we need people like Pokey LaFarge. Coming on like a bastard son of Woody Guthrie and Blind Blake, this is the kind of stuff Ry Cooder's been trying to do for decades: no-holds-barred, honest-to-goodness sheet-kicking music of the highest order. Pokey's forte are hot little vignettes like Walk Your Way Out Of This Town and I Don't Mind Dyin', dusty slices of timeless Americana coloured with peeping harmonica and blasting kazoo. Playing what looks like a 60s Harmony, and with just upright bass for company, Pokey sounds like he's having a lot of fun and tearing up the floorboards in the process. A lo-fi gem from an, as yet, unsung troubadour" - Julian Piper, Acoustic magazine, UK Website: www.myspace.com/pokeylafarge MP3s: www.myspace.com/pokeylafarge,

It's official, Tuesday nights are writing nights! We will do a very brief accountability at 6:30 and begin writing at 7:00. This is nose-to-the-grindstone writing, so bring whatever you write with and on, and your ideas. Note: there is no internet available, which eliminates one huge distraction right off the bat. You'll be amazed at how much you can accomplish with one little commitment like this. If you don't want to set a goal for the following week, you can come at 7:00 and get to work, otherwise, see you next week at 6:30! Detailed directions are available on the Message Board and include my cell number, so they're worth printing out.

Tickets are $25 and can be ordered online at http://culturalcafeaugust.eventbrite.com or by signing up with Karin directly by e-mailing [masked] or calling [masked] ext 23. REMEMBER, YOU MUST PRE-PAY IN ORDER TO SECURE YOUR SPACE AT THE MEETUP! PS: Merengue is available by MBTA bus but not the subway. I have opened up the message board here if you would like to post either offering or requesting a ride. Many/most of our members have access to cars and it is a friendly group, so I know we'll find a way for everyone to attend who would like to! ***more about Cultural Kitchen and Cultural Caf*** As an afterschool activity, Cultural Kitchen teaches Boston and Somerville youth about culture and diversity using cooking as the primary vehicle - just like travelers at our hostels learn about one another while cooking together in the hostel kitchen. Cultural Caf gives us a chance to experience something similar to what the students experience in our program. The setting is informal as we gather to build community, share a delicious meal, learn a bit about Dominican culture, and support a great cause.

Details are scarce on this mysterious group, but legend has it that in ancient times, when The Vampire Squid ruled supreme over his cephalopod bretheren, there rose a brilliantly jeweled and many splendored palace in the center of the Tethys Sea. Descended from an ancient and powerful race of spacefaring entities, the cephalopods were the masters of a puny two-legged race:humans. After Eons of bloody war, the humans managed to pull The Vampire Squid from power, and banished them and their cohorts to the depths. This band professes a desire to bring back the Cephalopods' ruling glory through otherworldy melodies, and mesmerizing rythms. Join them if you wish to be on the side of might.
